The children on my caseload come to me with very diverse backgrounds and needs (most of them have IEPs). All of my students live in generational or situational poverty and/or have experienced some kind of trauma in their early childhood years added to their learning disabilities, another reason why my job is so important! Each year, I have the privilege of watching unmotivated students blossom into engaged leaders and future community members through our school. I love the kids at my school because they do not expect anything, but are so appreciative of everything! In a recent study, students who participated in evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL) programs scored 13 points higher academically, had a 6 percent higher high school graduation rate, and were 11 percent more likely to graduate from college. My students learn how to calm down using sensory tools, meditation strategies, and social stories during my sessions. They practice in my office before transitioning and using these tools in the classroom and independently. As a school social worker, I support students that are struggling to cope with strong emotions. Having a library and sensory tools that target their struggles and support their needs is essential for their social-emotional-behavioral and academic success. I want to focus on meeting unique emotional needs at an early age so students have a greater chance for success long-term.
