The use of interactive notebooks in my class sets up good daily scientific habits, as well as allows the students to take responsibility for their own knowledge. Their notebook is their resource to look back on for vocabulary reinforcement and review. For ELL students, keeping routine with procedures is crucial, and having the tools such as glue sticks, scissors, pencil boxes, and markers immediately available allows us to focus on the content and keep it all in one place instead of looking around for materials and notes. ELL students benefit from visual, hands-on activities; the models and kits will allow my ELL students to make sense of science through a meaningful multi-modal method of interaction. Many concepts in chemistry can be tough, especially for students who are not proficient in English. Oftentimes, topics in chemistry can seem boring and tedious, however, making small changes such as writing on the lab tables with the window markers can give a whole new perspective on some of those topics and allow the students to become more engaged. The fewer barriers to science, the more these students will feel encouraged to enter the field. I believe that starts here, in this classroom. Given the proper resources and tools, I believe we are setting these students up to become future engineers and scientists. Please allow them that opportunity.
