Whiteboards are a resource many people tend to overlook for students. However, a whiteboard in the hand of a student with special needs is a tool that allows them to freely express and enjoy the process of learning in their own way. It gives some students a way to work out math problems or write out sentences and express ideas they can easily erase/change without the frustration of pen and paper. When working with students with special needs, even the smallest of common materials tend to be overlooked. Items such as pens and pencils, colored paper, tape, and even staplers all support our students with completing their academic and occupational goals. Those with specialized learning disabilities can have overwhelming reactions when even the smallest of problems such as not having tape to fix a torn piece of paper or not having the right type of pencil can be an overwhelming stimulus. When our students do have unexpected reactions, a soft stress fidget or even a short break with a rubber ball outside can release unwanted anxiety and allow our students to continue working. When I first thought about creating this project for whiteboards and calculators, each day another common item that was needed at the time fell though the cracks, and I felt like this project can fill in those cracks to prove a solid foundation for our students.
