Albert Einstein, Oprah Winfrey, and Jose Antonio Vargas. These famous people credit libraries and reading for their success. Help us give our kids the same opportunities. Please join our efforts to put a book in every hand and the love of reading in every heart. Our school is brand new and as the librarian, I want to create a warm and welcoming environment for the children to find a place where they can relax and read a good book. About a third of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, and it is especially crucial for them to have access to books and find a place where they will feel safe and welcome. Once in the library, I would like for the children to associate warm feelings with the books, so they will be inclined to read more and develop a lifelong love for books and reading. Our library must be inclusive. The school needs a room aside from the classrooms that is quiet and has rules. The library will be a special place because all the children in the school will visit it every week. To meet the various needs of our school community, we need a structured environment where children can find seating and furniture to fit their needs. We need special corners where children can immerse themselves in the stories, deal with overwhelming emotions, and regain control of their emotions. With the furniture, I will create special corner areas in the room for the children to sit and have much-needed personal space, or to read with their peers comfortably in small groups away from the other children.
