I teach elementary special education in a small, rural, Title 1 school. Our district does a great job of buying us the supplies we feel we need, but I use most of the district funds for educational supplies. In the past, special education students who are more impacted would get bussed into the 'big town' near us for school. Since I took the special education position at my school, I've made it my goal to build a classroom where all students can be successful, and none of our elementary special education students get bussed to bigger schools anymore! However, we have seen an increase in students that are more impacted, needing more specialized classroom accommodations. With the items that I have on my list, I not only will be able to provide educational services to my students, but I will also be able to satisfy some of their physical and sensory needs. Many of my students enjoy rocking to calm them - which can be provided by the swing and rocking chair. My students benefit from knowing the boundaries of the area they are in at the time - which can be provided by the rugs and bookshelves. Some students need constant work to keep their muscle tone and core strength - which can be provided with alternate seating. Some of my students learn better on the floor instead of a chair and table - which can be accommodated with the coffee table and floor pads. My room is currently all beige with fluorescent lighting and is very harsh for students with sensory issues - which can be helped with the lighting and chalkboard contact paper. Thank you for any contribution you are able to provide!
