In order for some children to do their best listening and learning they need a different type of seating in the classroom. There are a few students in my class who are such brilliant kids but really have little to no ability to sit still to listen. If they are able to bounce safely in their seats they would be able to pay attention to the lessons and retain much more information. When instruction begins in ELA we usually read a story or have a discussion as a group. The students who have trouble sitting still to listen to this part of the lesson are missing out on important information because they are distracted by doing things like rolling around on the floor, instead of sitting up and being an active participant. The other students also get distracted by these behaviors. The best way to get everyone participating is to start out with a comfortable flexible seating arrangement to meet all the needs of these fantastic learners!
