To begin competing in wrestling, the first thing that athletes will need are the essentials. We will need shoes, first and foremost. Our district is comprised of almost exclusively under-served minority students who face daily challenges aside from academics and athletics. This being a fact makes it difficult, at times, to retain athletes as their families can not afford some of the gear required for the sport. We have a mix of female and male wrestlers and do our best to make sure that EVERYONE is able to compete. With these materials, students will be able to practice and learn to wrestle. We will use these materials to make sure that our practice site is safe and sanitary. Students will learn the discipline associated with being a wrestler, as well as basic techniques of wrestling, and general guidelines for a healthier lifestyle. Wrestling is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn many things about themselves. As a person who grew up similar to most of the kids that I coach, I can say firsthand just how much wrestling can positively impact a life. It will be an opportunity for athletes to learn the basic fundamentals of a sport that will teach them about heart, toughness, and character as they continue on with it. As the great Dan Gable once said, "Once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy" and I firmly believe this to be the truth.
