Flexible seating allows my students to choose a place in the classroom where they can be comfortable and successful. My students are able to pick a place to sit during independent work time. They enjoy being able to take control of where they work. Already in first grade my students are able to make wise choices about where they sit. My students are more engaged and motivated when they are able to pick a comfortable place to work. We already have a variety of choices for flexible seating, including lap desks, clipboards, pillows and wobble stools. My goal is to provide my students with even more flexible seating options by incorporating a futon, coffee tables with low seats and cushions, and saucer chairs. We would get rid of many of our typical desks and hard chairs in exchange for more student-friendly options. I have already seen the positive impact that flexible seating has had on my students, and I look forward to seeing how this project will help us grow even more!
