The students will benefit from educational materials that stimulate and recreate experiences of daily living activities, this is known as symbolic play. Symbolic play occurs when the child uses objects or actions to represent other objects or actions related to the real world; symbolic play is intimately related to language development. This means that the better the child's ability to play representationally, the better the child's language skills develop. Students identified with developmental disorders, autism and difficulties with speech and/or language will benefit from direct intervention based on symbolic play and the materials used. Materials such as clothing representative of occupations, tools, utensils, and toys that stimulate vocalization, such as those that promote cause and effect, commands or following directions, will allow the student to develop communicative social interaction skills.
