Playing board games is NOT just for passing the time! Children develop life skills as they improve social interactions and develop higher order thinking skills through this type of play. Students will have a purpose for reading comprehension as they are required to read the instructions in order to learn how to play the games and to follow rules. Students will also improve higher level thinking skills as they have a chance to increase their concentration, and develop decision making strategies. Playing board games is not only entertaining and educational, but it can also contribute to the mental health of the children and help to reduce stress! I plan to use board games to help my students increase reading comprehension, improve social interaction, build a classroom community, and improve mental health.
