Picture a child arriving in America with only the clothes on their backs, no books and no English skills. They go to school where they see other children who speak other languages and they all must learn English to thrive. My students seem to learn to speak and understand English, but to make sense of the English alphabet is a struggle. Some have not seen books before. Many do not know how to write their names. And, they are 6, 7 and 8 years old. They must learn quickly how to keep up with their peers. They must master the English alphabet and learn to read to do well in school. But how can they learn to read simple words that their parents to not use at home? How can we help them master words that do not follow the basic rules of phonics? How will they be able to practice their English reading skills at home without books? Please support their efforts to learn English by providing the books at home that they have learned to read at school. After years of teaching young English Language Learners who have just arrived to America at my school, I have found that learning basic sight words (a key to being a successful reader) is more effectively learned by repetition in the silly Dr. Suess Beginner Books. These books have terrific simple pictures to match the basic words my students need to master (on, above, in, out, etc; red, blue, green, etc; big/small, where/there, went/go, was/is, etc. ) Books like Snow, Go Dog Go, Fish out of Water, and Hop on Pop are not books that our school has the funds to purchase for each student; however, these are the books my students like to read and re-read to learn English.
