A select group of fourth grade students will participate in a book club where they will read "Sing A Song" and "Eli Benjamin Bear: A Heart's Journey Home" and discuss how obstacles were overcome. Then they will read "The Bear Essentials" to a group of first graders as mentors. All of the books have a unit of study correlated to the South Carolina standards for literacy. So, the books will be incorporated in their regular literacy lessons. Reading can improve social emotional wellness when done in a community of learners. Students will journal their feelings and experiences as a result of reading the books and sharing with younger students.
