Many of my students do not have access to a library. The English department hosts a department night for students at Barnes and Noble, and many students have said that was their first time being in a book store. I want to help expose them to great literature out there and give them a chance to improve their reading. We often talk about how to close the achievement gap - and the best way to do this is to encourage literacy. I want to use these books for SSR time and to have my own check-in and check-out system. That way, students can take books home with them without having to hope their parents can take them to the library or book store.
