As the school social worker here at our high school, I am often tasked with helping my students cope and with problem solve having. More often than not, because my students look like adults, we forget that their brains and emotional ability to cope are still developing. My students can be in the middle of a crisis situation and I have learned that simply having a snack and soft lighting in place of harsh florescent lights can begin to deescalate my student just like helping elementary aged students. Sometimes I do not have all the words to help my students deal with their psychosocial and emotional needs for when they leave my office. I believe that a variety of journaling methods can continue to foster proper communication skills and coping skills for when they leave high school and journey into the adult world. I am asking for a sensory light, snacks and journals and mindfulness activities to help out my students.
