Shared reading allows all students regardless of their reading ability to access texts that are complex and engaging. In shared reading each student has their own copy of the text and they follow along while the teacher reads aloud. Together teacher and students practice decoding difficult words and making meaning from the text. Shared reading also creates a level playing field for students who would otherwise not be able to read a text. By sharing reading, students also build community and collaborative skills that are valued in education and the workplace.
