The use of sensory items is a daily activity in my classroom. Using the best sensory strategies, which our occupational therapist has recommended, is essential for our students learning. I am requesting sensory items and batteries which allow me to teach independence, sensory regulation and appropriate social behaviors. What becomes a problem is the fact that batteries never seem to last, toys break, materials seem to disappear, and the constant sanitizing is hard on our sensory objects. When something goes awry, it is these sensory objects which help regulate our students in the classroom. Students will use these sensory objects help reduce anxiety, stress and meets other needs. By having a good supply of these sensory materials, students will be able to focus on increasing their independence within the classroom.
