As part of our district-wide compassionate schools movement, we are learning about adversity and resilience. We know that when students are stressed out, they have a hard time learning. We want to create a culture of practicing self-regulation strategies, so students and teachers can be at their best for learning. These materials will help each teacher create a process and space for making self-care easy, accepted, and a regular part of everyday life. The tools we have requested are all evidence-based for helping a student take time to cool off to be able to get back to learning. First, we have a sand timer, so students have a set time to use the calming tools before returning to work. Next, we have an assortment of products that help students distract themselves from what might be bothering them or calm themselves down. A whole set of fidget tools, as well as a set of LEGOs, gives students an opportunity to choose something that helps them re-direct their attention. Other tools, such as the coloring book, sequin pillow, stress balls, therapy putty, and resistance bands help soothe frazzled nerves. A set of ear protection headphones allows a student to block out noise for a few minutes so they can take some deep breaths and get ready to work again. This set of tools will serve one classroom, approximately 90 students. We would love to be able to equip twenty classrooms in our high school!
