My sixth grade students are enrolled in what could be considered an "intensive care unit" middle school, focused on recruiting under performing fourth and fifth graders and implementing the intervention strategies needed to get them to grade level by high school. Many of my students are English Language Learners and will potentially be the first in their families to go to college - in an area where almost half of high school graduates are not qualified to apply to college. Most of my students lack an understanding of the fundamentals of math (what it means to add, subtract, multiply, and divide) that will hold them back permanently if they are not allowed to rediscover for themselves basic number sense, problem-solving, and grade-level skills.
