School is over. Summer plans are most likely canceled, so students will most likely be staying home with limited access to practically everything as New York continues to re-open. So what are teenagers who are curious, restless, and avid readers to do with themselves. My colleague and I will host a YA Book Club via zoom sessions to keep some of our students engaged with reading and also socializing with some of their peers. In our book club we will read Ibi Zoboi's Pride as we discuss the book's topics of gentrification (of our real life students' neighborhood of Bushwick, NY), Afro-Latinx identities, the first-generation immigrant experience, and allusions to Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. Yes! Zoboi's work is a remix of the classic Austen text. During this book club we will encourage our students to keep their ELA skills sharp (reading comprehension, analysis, and fluency) during the summer of the unknown.
