I am implementing flexible seating in the classroom starting in the school year 2021 - 2022. Researchers have found that certain classroom seating arrangements can encourage positive academic behavior and prevent disruptive behavior (Wannarka & Ruhl, 2008). Flexible seating will allow students to be comfortable in the classroom, but also allows me to arrange the room on a daily basis for the task at hand. Students who work independently are found to work best in rows. Students who need to collaborate work best in groups. Since the pandemic, students have been asked to sit in one place most of the day. If we are faced with staying in one place again, I want the students to be comfortable in their space. I have lap desks, floor seats, arm pillows, area rugs and mats for students. While I also have tables in the classroom for students who are most comfortable there, I would live to give more options to everyone.
