In my school district, Chromebooks have been utilized to help maximize students' successes for years. All students, with assistance from technology, can work towards meeting the goals of becoming 21st century learners. Students are constantly being asked to stretch the boundaries of what they think they can achieve as curriculum demands continue to increase in their complexity and rigor. For students who struggle with cognitive functioning and expressive language skills, these demands can seem like insurmountable tasks. Chromebooks have helped change this, however. Through the use of Chromebooks, students who at one time struggled to get their voices heard can now be heard loud and clear. It is amazing the impact these devices have had on my struggling students. My students are now able to speak their wonderfully creative ideas into a microphone and have those ideas automatically transferred to print on the screen. They are also able to highlight given text and have it spoken back to them. It truly has opened up a whole new world of learning for my struggling students. The downside to relying on technology, however, is the cost. Due to the cost and my district's limited budget, it is difficult to aqquire enough chromebooks so that all struggling learners can have access to Chromebooks and the necessary headsets with microphones as often as they need them. This dilema is what led me to DonorsChoose.org
