My students are exploring challenging concepts (both theoretical and real) related to historical and current marginalization of "the other." As we consider the experiences of various ethnic groups, we are diving into their challenges, stories of resistance, and their contributions to literature, the arts, scientific and technical innovations, politics, and various forms of entertainment. Buttons designed to communicate the ideas explored in our Ethnic Studies course will effectively allow my students to include the entire campus in their learning. Custom-designed buttons will allow my students to express their learning creatively, and to distribute those expressions school-wide. Finally, these button makers will essentially create a cumulative project as students will design buttons for each of the groups we study throughout the year.
