Students in my year-long Holocaust Literature course recently finished Night by Elie Wiesel. Next semester, they will be learning about other genocides including the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994. Clemantine Wamariya is a survivor of that genocide, and when she came to America, she won a spot in Oprah Winfrey's contest by submitting an essay in which she related her life to that of Elie Wiesel. Receiving copies of The Girl Who Smiled Beads will enable my students to read a memoir, like Night, to learn one individual's story of survival. They will be keeping journals in which they will respond to the book and the writing style, connecting to their own lives and experiences and increasing their knowledge about comparative genocide. As many of my students deal with trauma of their own, it will enable them to see what fortitude and perseverance look like. They will be able to learn from Ms. Wamariya's courage.
