Our large public high school largely serves working-class Chinese and Latino neighborhoods in San Francisco. According to the 2015-2016 School Accountability Report Card, 54.6% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Students in my Biology classes are freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a wide range of English and math skills ranging from emerging speakers to fluent writers and basic algebra to AP calculus! Their families work as construction, hotel, restaurant, and factory workers, yet our students have hopes of going to UC and Cal State universities upon graduating. Despite their economic situation, our students stay fashionable with the latest smartphones which they use to consume movies, social media, and video games, yet they are largely unfamiliar with the Internet's educational potential.
