Elementary students of today have a wide range of learning styles and learning needs. Three iPads for our gym could help our students learn and grow in very tangible and healthy ways. The ability to teach physical and health concepts to students in small groups and individually, via iPads, could improve the quality of their lives. The iPads could help us bring to our classroom the important combination of traditional learning and electronic resources known as blended learning. We would also utilize these technology tools to provide student choice and help them take ownership of their learning. According to the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Washington (University of Washington 2019) "Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills, and promotes meaningful learning experiences. Instructors who adopt a student-centered approach to instruction increase opportunities for student engagement, which then helps everyone more successfully achieve the course’s learning objectives." Our district requirements include multiple performance skills AND health concepts each grading period for our 1000+ kindergarten through 5th grade students. To complicate this expectation we only see our students every third school day. Three Apple iPads would help in two ways. First, those students requiring small group, individual, or repeated instruction would be able to receive more immediate practice and review. Second, those students showing mastery of a concept would have access to challenges or extensions to further their engagement with the material. Thank you for helping us help our students become active 21st century learners.
