English language learners are often thrown into classrooms where only English is spoken. On top of that, my student's struggle with language skills, such as learning vocabulary, understanding meanings, and producing meaningful sentences. Being bilingual myself, I feel like I can give them the extra help they need to succeed in school without feeling left behind. ELL students want to learn English, and they want to break the language barriers to be full participators. With story books in both English and Spanish, I can engage every student. We can laugh together and learn meaning with no one feeling left out. Once our ELL students learn the basics, they need help getting on level academically. By further teaching language skills, such as idioms and multiple meaning words, I can help my student's not only understand and speak their basic wants and needs, but they can fully participate academically and go on to college with the same potential as native English speaker. Sequencing skills are the foundation for writing stories. Reading comprehension skills will help them to understand and learn from history. Social-emotional prompts will help them express their wants and needs socially and professionally. Language skills are essential. Teaching these skills at the elementary level is fundamental to my student's future success.
