Our new Superintendent has challenged teachers to create a “book-rich” environment in every classroom--I would like to extend this to the counseling office as well. As my "library" is a little different than the average teacher, it requires very specific literature to be effective. Research shows that bibliotherapy is beneficial and effective for students to learn new social and coping skills. When I meet with students, I often use books with characters who are experiencing similar issues that these students face. Being able to read them a story and finding out that others have had similar concerns and have been able to overcome these issues can be very beneficial, theraputic, and a good learning experience. The more books available for these students, the better their prognosis can be.
