My school prides itself on Knowing Every Student Well and understands the importance of a Childs social-emotional well-being. Co-regulation is defined as warm and responsive interactions that provide the support, coaching, and modeling children need to “understand, express, and modulate their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors” (Murray et al. 2015, 14). Every behvioral Crisis can be turned into a learning opportunity. There is meaning behind every behavior. Sometimes my students just need to get their sillies/wiggles out or take a brain break, may be tired from the long bus ride to school in the morning. I want this calm down corner to address each need. Materials like deep-sensory weighted vest for students who just need a hug, soft, flexible seating for comfort and relaxation, an easel that will display "I feel, I want to feel, what can I can do to feel " with matching visuals, a timer, and a mirror with the 4 moods surrounding it to make it more interactive and authentic. Allowing students to have variety and participate in making choices that effect them (from 2-3 given by an adult based on students management needs as per IEP/BIP) makes a positive difference and is a part of co-regulation.
