Our students are leaders in Howland High School and the community and will be able to partake in an incredible experience of applying, understanding, and hands-on learning of the principles of non-violence and the perspective of the Civil Rights Movement. Prior to the immersion students have to complete many hours of study through book studies, discussions, and meetings with their Sojourn mentors. They participate in the non-violence parade and do fundraising to help cover the costs of their moving classroom experience. They will receive social studies flex-credit for their rigorous academic preparation before, during, and following this trip that applies towards their high school graduation. The Sojourn Project is an empowering, academic, immersion that takes our students far beyond the classroom. Sojourn is not a vacation. Students retrace the path of the Modern Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's across several states in the South. They will visit the homes, churches, public buildings, edifices, and monuments where defining moments of the Civil Rights movement occurred. The long term vision and end result of Sojourn is simple. Our students who are returning Sojourners become ambassadors of inclusivity, demonstrating heightened courage to effect social change, an increased belief in their capacity to conduct rigorous scholastic work, and a principled commitment to community service and civic responsibility in our community. They become leaders and champions for love and understanding from this trans-formative experience.
