My 6th grade math students are fantastic kiddos-all 198 of them! They put for their best effort, think outside of the box, and are daring greatly on a daily basis. They also learn at very different paces which lends itself to being an interesting scale to balance. I have started to recording mini lessons for the content students will learn this year. During some classes, I will have students watch the recording rather than me lecture in front of the entire class. This allows students to fast forward, rewind, or pause as they need to. However, more importantly this grants me a quiet classroom with time to pull students to work in small groups that need extra help or need that extra push into something a bit more dynamic. What we are in dire need of in order for our small group sessions to run more smoothly, are supplies to outfit our little nugget of space within our classroom. Space is of the essence in each class, so having the portable whiteboard and seating cushions will be incredibly helpful. We could even host a small group in the hall with a student leader. I purchased some headphones from Dollar Tree that served their purpose, but have not worn well with the use of 198 students, so a new class set will surely help set our classroom up for success. A class set of calculators will be an immense help as we move onto more complex topics so that students can focus on the content rather than the nitty gritty math computations.
