Unfortunately our school does not have any class sets of novels that are written by Hispanic writers for AP Literature students. My project would allow us to have enough books for each student to read the novel, participate in class discussions while referencing textual evidence, and explore the cultural idea of magical realism. Also, the students would explore the function of telling a single story from different characters' perspectives and how that contributes to meaning of the work as a whole. We are requesting a class set of Chronicle of a Death Foretold. My students will be asked to complete a creative project: writing a story, making a video, or creating artwork that shows multiple perspectives in a single story from their own lives like Marquez did in the novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold, while incorporating elements of magical realism into their projects. While reading the novel, students will also see other examples of magical realism in film clips, artwork by Hispanic artists and writers. These examples will serve as models along with the book ensuring my students are successful. Throughout this unit of study students will keep a journal of their experiences before and during the project, which will help them in the presentation of their work. Once the projects have been completed, we will have a showcase where the students present their work to their peers and members of the Hispanic community: parents, relatives, community and school leaders; making this project a real world experience. Not only will the novels that I've requested assist this year's AP Literature students but will allow this project to be done for future students as well.
