Research has shown that time spent reading is one of the most effective ways of increasing student achievement. Because of this, my students read independently up to 30 minutes a day. I use this time to work with small groups to address students' individual needs. Many of my students find it challenging to stay focused on their books while other things are happening in the room. Having cozy reading nooks all over the room, where students can be "alone" and comfortable, would contribute greatly to my students' focus. Many of my students tell me they would like to sit in "the blue comfy chair," while reading, but unfortunately, there are only one of those! By having soft spots they can sink into and move to different spots in the room, students can create that perfect spot that will help them to focus!
