My colleagues and I share a handful of old microscopes that have seen better days. During our science labs and teaching in general, one of the main goals is to keep all kids engaged and interested. This becomes very difficult when students are excited about using a microscope but the lack of materials makes the opportunities to use them sparse and short-lived. Keeping all students engaged is the easiest way to have solid classroom management and to drastically minimize discipline issues. The students really enjoy the 'mystery powder' experiment where students study the physical properties of different white substances (flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda) and then I mix 2-4 white substances together and then they must use the microscopes, plus their notes, to discern what combination of powders make up the mystery powder. We also do an ecosystem lesson in which we collect water samples from the school pond and make slides to see all tiny organisms that play a part in the food chain.
