Reading is one of the most important skills a student learns in their first few years of school. Two necessary components of reading development are quality texts that are at students' reading levels and access to reading many different books. To aid in reading development, I send home "book bags" each Monday. Inside each book bag are 8 books that students take home and read throughout the week. They return their book bags on Friday. These books are both fiction and nonfiction, easy readers and known texts we have read in class. The variety of these texts gives students the opportunity to read 8 new books each week. Books are costly and not always available at home. With our classroom book bags, every student has access to 8 new texts each week. These are texts that are at their reading levels and ones that directly support their development. While my students love their book bags, the current books inside are very well loved and worn. They desperately need to be updated so that I can continue sending book bags home. The products I chose would be used to build new book bags so I can continue giving students access to new books at home each week. My students love reading, and they similarly love getting to read "new" books every week. Continuing our book bags would both support students' reading development and build their excitement about reading--both of which are vital to reading success.
