These Portable CD Players will give my students an opportunity to interact with print on an individual level. Our class is reading all day long, but often students are not able to see the words and follow along with what is being read. My students love when we have read alouds in class and the CD players will give them multiple chances throughout the day to experience this. These will be available to the students during our ELA centers time (almost half of our day) and during free play. These CD Players will also provide my students with an opportunity that I cannot give to them: a chance to hear literature from their home language while they are at school. While it is important for students who are learning a second language to hear as much English as possible, it is also important for these students to hear and interact with texts that are in their first language.
With these CD players, my students will be able to choose books that they would like to hear in both English and their home language. This personal interest in the literature will give students a better understanding of the text. I hope it will also give them a connection and an opportunity to learn and hear about their own culture.
