Being that our school represents the economically disadvantaged, the under served, and is located in a geographically isolated area, the basics is where we start. Basic organizational tools often get overlooked. Fifty eight out of every one hundred students live below the Federal Poverty Line. To make a point, two glue sticks at our local store is $4. One composition notebook is $4. The other supplies are the basics for running a classroom. Our Science department only allows $500 per teacher for our demonstration kits. We do not have allocations for office supplies. Student success depends upon whether or not students have the supports to accomplish what is being asked of them. When student environments have the basics - the items they need to organize their thoughts and compose examples of how they understand their world - then student success has one less barrier.
