Sixth grade is a crucial turning point in many students' journey with their relationship with reading. Some student increase their love for literature and happily pick of their independent reading book at any opportunity, while many begin to loose interest or stick to the same graphic novel series for months. We are trying to navigate away from graphic novels (most common choice) and return to chapter books. I want to show them the vast variety of literature and reach more students by broadening their access to books that meet their individual interests to keep the flame burning. We can use these novels during silent reading time during class and most importantly, at home for additional practice. The more students read, the greater their own writing and comprehension skills become as they expand their vocabulary and see different text structures. I have specific students in mind whose abilities can be strengthened specifically though independent reading.
