When students have the option to choose books that interest them and then are given the time to read those books, endless opportunities are presented to them, from increased academic success to building empathy, focus, and imagination. My students read independently in class, engage in discussions about their books, ask each other questions, and give presentations based upon their reading choices. They are able to make connections to their own lives as well as the world around them. By the middle of the year, they are making connections between different books they have read and are recommending novels to each other.
