I work with ESL students who are trying to improve themselves in order to leave the the program. They are tested every year to show what level they are on. They have to do a speaking part in which they have to record their voice in response to a picture, video or story. Here comes the problem. The headphones we use do not cancel out the other noises in the classroom. My students tend to be shy when they feel others can hear them. This becomes a problem when it comes time to take a state test that involves speaking. What we need are headphones that block out the sound but also have a microphone so the students won't feel self conscious about talking out loud for the test. The hardest part of the state test tends to be the speaking. Students speak to softly since they are can hear others around them. We are hoping with better headphones that our students will feel that they are more secluded and feel freer to talk loud enough to be heard. So the other ESL teacher and I are hoping that with improved headphones, we can have more students improve their scores.
