My students value reading, but often find themselves disengaged from books traditionally taught in high school classrooms. As an English department, we are seeking to increase our student engagement and develop a lifelong love of reading in our students, which is why we are introducing a Young Adult fiction class next year. These books get at important themes common in classics, but through texts that are more accessible to our demographic of students. We are excited to implement this new class, but we do not have a large enough school budget to supply enough texts for our students next year.
