Esperanza Education Center offers its students opportunities to grow and develop in the domains of education, employment, and independent living. Since a vast majority of our students are adults, we attempt to give as many of these opportunities as possible, in the community, however, there is a portion of our school community, whose needs are served on the school campus. These students have such significant medical/physical/social needs that cannot be served outside of our institution. By providing a lush and well-developed school garden, we will be fulfilling our mission to provide these opportunities. School gardens have direct positive impact on the lives of students who work in them, especially those experiencing their lives with moderate-severe disabilities. We have determined the need to expand our current garden to accommodate the diverse needs of our students. The garden planned will allow our students to have hands-on experiences in science, math, problem solving, creativity, recreation/leisure, etc. Tending a garden will give our students purpose, self-determination activities, therapeutic sensory experiences, and responsibilities. A garden will create an outdoor environment for students and teachers to help utilize learning and vocational curriculum. This space allows our students to explore and interact with nature and can even empower them to develop job skills they can use after graduation. This garden will allow our community increased access to fresh, home-grown foods and further enrich their mental and physical health. Classrooms can utilize this space to grow their own food so that these fruits/veggies can then be transferred to the kitchen to prepare wholesome meals. In addition, this garden can serve as a place for students to decompress and take a break.
