Teaching life skills is essential for students with special needs. Often these skills are not taught but acquired over time. Students with special needs require more direct instruction and multiple hands-on experiences to learn new skills. One very important skill we are not able to currently teach is how to properly wash and dry clothing. My class needs a new washer and dryer set in order for my students to learn this life skill.
With a new washer and dryer, students will learn how to properly measure detergent, sort clothes for washing, use the machines, and fold their clothes. Students will have the opportunity to wash their own clothing as well as a clothing stash for emergencies. Students will also get to wash and dry towels and aprons from other classes for more experience.
Not only will my students learn this life skill, but many other students at the school will have access to the washer and dryer. Many students do not have access to a washer and dryer at home and often come to school in dirty clothes. The students will have free access to wash their clothes during school so that they will always have clean, fresh clothes and feel more confident about themselves.
