Graphic novels give kids an opportunity to escape and explore through reading. Even our struggling readers find joy in reading graphic novels and being able to envision the story. We use graphic novels as much as possible in my class to encourage kids to enjoy reading and build confidence within their capabilities. I also chose some books that are specific to my students. Ones that give examples of what it is like being Deaf in a hearing world. Most of the time my students struggle in finding their place in this world. Their identities are torn between the hearing world and deaf world. YES, there is a whole deaf culture that few of our students are exposed to. I encourage my students to take pride in their abilities instead of focusing on the 'disability' they have been labeled with. I am hoping to give my students a library with an abundance of books that they can relate to on a personal level and are also driven and excited to read.
