My deaf and hard of hearing students learn best at school when speech and language therapy supports the classroom by using books as educational materials. Books read throughout the year provide opportunities to build vocabulary, language, and overall communication skills that they can use in their classrooms to be successful learners. Developing positive relationships with books from a young age can allow students to be the most successful throughout their school years. My students need repeated opportunities to build speech and communication skills. I use a different book every week in speech and language therapy that has vocabulary and language concepts that are appropriate for the season and time of year. The student can then talk about these concepts and use this vocabulary in their classrooms with their teachers and other students.
