These materials would make the biggest difference in our classroom! They would give students that need it a quiet outlet for the energy that they have built up. Fidgets allow students to keep their body moving which can be important for those that struggle with self-regulation. The chew necklaces can be very centering and allow for a person to use their mouths without talking or making noises (so that the other students are not disrupted). Tapping feet on a footrest---"Repetition is movement. Movement is alerting. Repetition is the same motion or input over and over which is calming. Remember, the brain needs to be in a quiet state of alert. There should be a balance between awake but calm. We don’t always want to calm our children down. Sometimes we need to calm them UP! Alert the brain but quiet the emotional centers." My 1st-grade students need a way to fidget without distracting themselves or others!
