In literature class, students learn the different types of writing including speeches. While we read some of the most famous speeches in history, they are all written decades ago by adults. Although they have a place in history, they have little relevance to a modern teenager's life. And then we have Greta Tunberg, who started a whole movement to draw attention to climate change through her passionate protests and speeches. Greta's book, No One is Too Small to Make a Difference, will inspire my students to challenge themselves to go beyond the classroom. I can use this book in class to study the format of the speech itself, look at the persuasive elements or study her body of work as a whole. Regardless of someone's position on climate change, the fact that her speeches caused a movement to occur, and brought her the title "Person of the Year" by Time magazine, speaks volumes for her writing and style. My students can learn a lot about writing and rhetoric by reading this book. My students often feel a disconnect to the text, but the opportunity to read speeches from a girl younger than themselves will help them relate to a writer and see possibilities for themselves. I added some additional books for students who would like to further their reading on the topic. Finally, Greta is outspoken about her autism and I hope to give some inspiration for my students who are also on the spectrum. My project will help me teach speech reading but do so using relevant speeches from a young, dynamic writer.
