I work in a small, rural district in Wisconsin with a student population of about 375. Nearly 60% of the population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Over 20% of the population receives special education services. It is challenging to work with students whose families have a hard time providing for them let alone being able to learn and grow through education. The goal of the Family and Consumer Sciences program (part of Career and Technical Education) is to provide students with real life, hands-on skills that will prepare them for the next step in life. For most that next step is the work force or family life; some, but not even half will attend some form of post secondary education. For a few, graduating high school will be the most education any one in their family has ever received. With grim statistics like these, my students need all the help they can get in order to support themselves and their families for a productive future.
