I teach Biology and Astronomy at a school that uses the Project Based Learning Model. Each week I assign a project based on the new material we are learning. I have been teaching for two months now. Being a first year teacher at a "Project Based" school is difficult. Each of the art supplies on my list my students have requested on past projects and had to ask the other teachers for because I couldn't buy the supplies for them. My students love incorporating art in science, but as a new teacher, I'm not able to provide them the supplies that they need. The art supplies will help my students be able to complete the next project which is a 3D Cell Analogy. In this project, students must make an analogy for each organelle in the cell. This will help them remember what specific job each organelle has. This assignment aligns with the Next Generations Science Standard MS-LS1-2. My astronomy students will be building a 3D model of the sun. This model must include solar flares, prominence, the layers, and dark spots. They will need to use all of the art supplies in order to complete their models. Both of these projects have the students use the cross-cutting concepts of Developing and Using Models, and Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions. My room currently has concrete floors and bare walls. I believe the tree decals and space art will help set a zen-like atmosphere in the room. I have many students with an IEP/504 who really suffer from anxiety. I think that if I could provide a better atmosphere for them they would calm down and be able to focus on their classwork.
