Many of my students are ELL/ESOL students. This means that English is their second language and not their native tongue. My students are seventh graders with seventh-grade interests and enjoy reading material that is high-interest. The problem is they are still working on building their literacy up to grade level, and they often find long classroom novels discouraging and frustrating. However, my students, my reluctant readers LOVE graphic novels! Graphic novels help build my students' literacy confidence and boost their academic self-esteem. While most graphic novels should be read for fun and for encouraging independent reading, The Giver graphic novel is perfect for the classroom. It contains all of the important details of Lois Lowry's original novel, but it contains beautiful illustrations to encourage and engage my reluctant readers. Whereas I have a class set of the original novel, a class set of the graphic novel would open a whole new world of reading confidence for my deserving students. Thank you for helping me promote confident, enthusiastic readers in my classroom. Readers ARE leaders!
