As a school nurse in a low-income community, I see students with a wide variety of needs on a daily basis. It goes far beyond medical need when dealing with these children. I see countless cases of stomach aches that are due to hunger. School meals are the only meals some of these students receive. While we do provide free breakfast, if a parent does not get their child to school in time to eat, this does no good. The lunch is not enough for some of our older students and their parents can't afford snack money. We have many female students who need hygiene products their parents can't afford. For these reasons, I have been purchasing these things myself for my students.
